Social media weekly round-up: ROI, what content to share…when and how

It’s a week in infographics as Facebook posts its third quarter earnings for 2012, we find some great tips on optimising posts on Twitter and LinkedIn, and what exactly are consumers looking for on social media? Read on to find out.

#1: Facebook’s advertising successfully reaches out to local business: A short time ago, Facebook introduced a new advertising format primarily aimed at small businesses but larger organisations are jumping on board too – in fact many of our clients have been trying it out with varying levels of success. Facebook created Promoted Posts; simple and easy-to-use ads where businesses pay to “promote” a Facebook post to a larger audience. The strategy has largely worked; in Facebook’s third quarter earnings posted this week, they reported 300,000 businesses have now purchased Promoted Posts. Interestingly, 25% of these businesses had never bought Facebook ads before – which shows how successful Facebook has been in targeting a new market, specifically local businesses who don’t usually have an online advertising budget. Read more about the report from TechCrunch here. Have you used Facebook’s Promoted Posts? How successful have they been for you?

#2: Have you heard of Facebook’s Interest Lists? Facebook have recently revamped their “Interest Lists”, similar to the list features on Twitter or Google+. As many of you would know, lists are a great way to take control of what appears on your newsfeed, and Facebook lists are no different – instead of seeing absolutely everything from all your friends and the pages you follow, you can tailor what you see. We agree with Amy Porterfield from Entrepreneur who says Interest Lists can be a valuable way to monitor the opinions and updates of those who affect your brand the most, such as competitors, customers and industry leaders. If you’re one of many who aren’t really using Interest Lists, find out how to utilise their full potential here.

#3: Determining your social media ROI: This infographic from InventHelp is the latest of many on social media return on investment (ROI).  But unlike many others, this one explains how ROI is commonly calculated, and then how it should be calculated. It shows that many marketers determine their social media return on investment through how many followers they have or their website traffic, rather than directly relating their marketing to sales results. It also makes a good point that is often overlooked by small businesses; to gain more followers, you need to create content. Whether that’s a blog, a YouTube video, infographics or even memes, content generation is a big part of creating a valuable online presence. There are some great points that are worth a read. Olivier Blanchard from Business2Community talks through the infographic here.

#4: Popular social media content: This month’s issue of Marketing magazine includes a great summary on the use of social media in Australia and what consumers want from brands. There’s some interesting data here, including the popularity of different social media in different states. Did you know that Twitter is more popular in NSW and ACT, while LinkedIn is used more in NSW and Victoria? In good news for marketers, the research shows 44% of consumers surveyed said they were happy to see advertisements on social media. Unsurprisingly, discounts and giveaways are most popular with consumers, with 64% following brands for the discounts. Don’t despair if your business doesn’t post discounts though; 48% of consumers want news and information from the companies and brands they follow.

#5: How to optimise your posts: Will Russell from Social Media Today summaries this recent infographic which has a range of great tips on optimising your social shares to get the best responses on Twitter and LinkedIn. The data is separated into B2B and B2C. Did you know that using a number in your Twitter message will generate 50% more clicks for business to business companies? And if you’re a business to community brand sharing information on LinkedIn, it’s best to post it on a Monday  - it yields more clicks than on any other day. Read Will’s summary here.
